View full detailsBDSM is for those who know themselves—and want to put that knowledge to use. Laced Up Boutique started as a brick-and-mortar erotic shop with BDSM at the heart of its product line. Those roots are embedded in every purchasing decision, every conversation with a customer, and every product we add. Your kink is no exception here. It’s the reason we do this.
What are BDSM products?
BDSM stands for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. The term is an umbrella term for forms of play centered on power dynamics, stimulation, and trust. None of these three elements is optional.
In practice, it involves consciously playing with tension and control, always based on mutual consent and clear agreements. The dom takes the lead, and the sub voluntarily surrenders control. The sadist provides stimulation, and the masochist receives it. Some people switch between both roles—they call themselves a switch.
BDSM gear, bondage gear, SM toys, fetish accessories: the terms overlap and refer to the same spectrum. Whatever you’re looking for is here.
Why does BDSM appeal to so many people?
BDSM stimulates both the body and the mind at the same time. Letting go of control provides a sensation that regular sex rarely achieves. So does the conscious surrender of control. Submissives describe more intense sessions as an almost meditative state: the mind shuts off, the body takes over. That state has a name—subspace—and anyone who’s experienced it understands why people keep coming back.
For dominant partners, it works differently. Taking full responsibility for another person, within agreed-upon boundaries, requires presence and attention in a way that everyday interactions rarely do. That creates an intensity that brings two people closer together.
There’s physiology behind it: endorphins and adrenaline raise the pain threshold and strengthen the sense of connection. Aftercare—the time spent together after a session—is just as valuable to many people as the play itself.
Types of BDSM equipment: from bondage to impact play
Bondage: tying up and setting free
Handcuffs and ankle cuffs are the most accessible entry point: easy to put on, easy to remove, and suitable for a first-time experience. Those who want to go further turn to rope. Cotton is soft and forgiving; jute is sturdier and the classic choice for shibari—the Japanese bondage technique in which the aesthetics of the binding are just as important as its function. Bondage tape leaves no adhesive residue on the skin and is reusable. Spreader bars keep arms and legs apart and give the dominant partner freedom of movement. A bondage set combines the most accessible options in a single package.
Impact play: whip, paddle, and flogger
Impact play revolves around giving and receiving strikes—by hand, with a paddle, or with a whip. A paddle distributes the impact over a large area: a broad sensation, easy to control. A whip delivers a targeted strike and requires more control from the giver. A flogger has multiple straps and provides a softer, broader effect than a whip. You set the intensity yourself through force, speed, and material. Start low, build up.
Nipple clamps: tension on sensitive areas
Nipple clamps increase sensitivity through light pressure and reduced blood flow. The real effect comes when they’re removed: the resumption of blood flow creates an intense, burning sensation that for many people is the highlight of the session. There are adjustable clamps for those who want to regulate the pressure, clamps with weights for extra pulling force, and versions with a chain connecting the breasts and neck. Nipple clamps work for every body.
Chastity: control as a form of play
A chastity cage literally gives the dominant partner the key to the other’s sexual pleasure. The cage encloses the penis and makes an erection impossible as long as the lock is closed. Plastic models are lighter and cheaper; stainless steel versions are more durable and harder to remove without a key. The players determine in advance how long the chastity will last. The release upon removal is a unique source of excitement.
Sensation play and blindfolds
A blindfold is the most underrated BDSM accessory. Without sight, touch becomes more intense, sounds louder, and anticipation sharper. Sensation play builds on this: ice, candle wax, a feather, a pinwheel—each material sends a different sensation to the skin. The combination of a blindfold and varying stimuli is an accessible, powerful way to build tension without extensive equipment.
What should you look for when buying BDSM items?
The material determines safety and the experience. Silicone, stainless steel, and ABS plastic are body-safe, non-porous, and easy to clean—the safest choice for toys that come into direct contact with the skin. Leather is durable and feels good, but it absorbs bacteria if left untreated: use leather cleaner and conditioner after each use. Faux leather is cheaper but more prone to tearing with intensive use.
For bondage rope: cotton and jute are softer and easier to tie than synthetic fibers. Avoid polyester for intense bondage—it cuts into the skin when under tension. If you’ve tied someone up tightly, always keep a pair of scissors within reach so you can quickly free them.
Cleaning: Silicone and stainless steel can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap; a toy cleaner also works. Wipe leather down with a damp cloth and then treat it. Wash bondage rope by hand and let it dry completely before storing—rope stored while damp will develop mold.
Frequently Asked Questions About BDSM
How do you get started with BDSM as a beginner?
Start small and build up. A blindfold, soft handcuffs, a light bondage set—that’s enough for your first time. Agree on boundaries and a safeword in advance: a word that stops everything immediately, without explanation. The traffic light principle works well: green means continue, yellow means adjust, red means stop. Also read our blog about communication in BDSM before you start.
What is aftercare, and why is it important?
After a BDSM session, adrenaline and endorphin levels drop rapidly. This can lead to a feeling of low spirits afterward—known as “subdrop” for the sub and “domdrop” for the dom. Aftercare is the care you provide each other to help cope with this: cuddling, a warm drink, a blanket, silence. What that looks like varies from person to person and from session to session. Discuss it beforehand, even if you don’t think you’ll need it yet.
What’s the difference between bondage and BDSM?
Bondage is one aspect of BDSM—specifically, the act of tying someone up and restricting their freedom of movement. BDSM is the umbrella term for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. You can practice bondage without any SM elements, just as you can explore dominance without tying anyone up.
Does BDSM have a long history?
Longer than most people think. The organized BDSM scene has existed since the 1950s, but the practices themselves are much older. Shibari has roots in Japan dating back to the 17th century. In our blog about the history of BDSM, you can read more about how these forms of play have evolved over time.
How do you clean BDSM toys?
Clean silicone and stainless steel with warm water and soap; a toy cleaner also works. Wipe down leather toys with a damp cloth and then treat them with leather cleaner—never store leather while it’s damp. Wash bondage rope by hand at 30 degrees and let it dry completely before storing. Plastic and ABS can be cleaned with soap and water; avoid using alcohol on coated surfaces.
